Samuel Ehalaiye - a journey from Nigeria to New Zealand
Samuel Ehalaiye, originally from Nigeria, embarked on his academic expedition at Massey University’s Palmerston North campus in February 2020. His decision to enrol was primarily influenced by the positive experiences relayed by his uncle’s family in New Zealand, leading him to choose a Bachelor of Accountancy.
This decision was born from his natural inclination towards the business sector and his belief in the important role of technical skills. Samuel recognised the universal value and demand for accounting skills across all significant businesses.
Samuel’s parents and his uncle’s family in New Zealand played an influential role throughout his journey. Their support and belief in his abilities have been instrumental in shaping his path.
“They have always supported and believed in me and pushed me to be my best possible self,” Samuel says.
Beyond his academic achievements, Samuel is most proud of a recent venture of his - a budding photography business. His work was recognised by the Massey University Student Association, marking his first paid photography gig.
In his second year at Massey, Samuel struggled to balance his studies with volunteering, casual work, and his newfound interest in photography. But with the support of friends and determination, he pulled through.
“A boy walked in, and a man walked out. I’m walking away with so much more than a degree,” Samuel says. From a young boy fresh from Nigeria, the campus, vibrant with opportunities, allowed him to take on various roles for campus events, thus honing his skills and building his confidence.
“These experiences also provided me with numerous networking opportunities, leading to job interviews and offers,” Samuel shares.
As for what’s next on Samuel’s journey, besides nurturing his photography passion, he has begun putting his degree to good use as an external auditor in Wellington.
