From Zambia to Wellington: a tale of resilience and lifelong learning

Born in Zambia, raised in Tāmaki, and flourishing in Wellington at 27, Mwangileni Kampanga has navigated a unique path. Her academic journey has been far from straightforward, but these detours led her to discover Massey’s Social Policy programme.

“The degree encouraged me to examine my worldview critically and to adopt different theoretical perspectives to gain a deeper understanding of the social constructs that shape policy decisions impacting New Zealanders and their well-being,” Mwangi shares.

With dedicated tutors, lecturers, and supportive online classmates, Massey provided a nurturing and stimulating environment that propelled Mwangi’s growth. She discovered an academic setting that championed independence and mentorship - a combination Mwangi valued.

Throughout her journey, Mwangi was never alone. Her mother and family provided immense support, and she acknowledges them as influential figures.

“Big shout out to you, mama!” Mwangi says.

Mwangi’s relocation from Auckland to Wellington, a bold decision she made amidst her studies, is a proud moment. However, realising that she needed to abandon a programme she’d invested three years into was challenging. This moment of self-awareness was a turning point, pushing her to align her academic path more closely with her passions. It was a difficult decision that taught her the value of adaptability and embracing change.

Mwangi treasures her relationships during her leisure time, often connecting with friends and family and forming new connections. Depending on her mood, you might find her dancing the night away or immersed in a thought-provoking non-fiction book.

What’s in the cards for Mwangi next? Unsurprisingly, more learning! But not before she takes a well-deserved break to soak in the vibrant energy of Wellington. With a deep love for writing, Mwangi is eyeing a postgraduate programme in creative writing, ready to embark on a new academic adventure.
