Charting new heights: a fascinating transition from media to aviation research

We are delighted to share the compelling story of Massey alumnus, Hanjun ’Louis’ Wu, whose fascination with aviation marked a distinct shift from his previous experience in the advertising and media industry. Originating from China, Louis brought half a decade’s experience in media when he embarked on his educational journey at Massey.

The intrigue of aviation steered Louis towards a new direction. He joined Massey’s esteemed Master of Aviation programme. This passion, in time, guided him to further his studies with a PhD at the School of Aviation. Here, he undertook university-funded research projects, all supported by a doctoral scholarship from Massey University.

Louis’ proud achievement lies not in the degrees he obtained but in the passion he discovered for aviation research. It has allowed him to explore new knowledge and develop critical thinking about contemporary issues in the aviation industry.

His journey, while rewarding, was not without challenges. Facing manuscript rejections, even after multiple revisions, was a daunting experience. However, Louis saw these rejections as opportunities to improve his work and maintain a positive attitude.

Reflecting on his time at Massey, Louis describes a journey filled with learning, new experiences, and friendships with fellow PhD students from various schools. His love for New Zealand’s natural beauty also saw him spending his spare time hiking and travelling around the country.

Looking ahead, Louis plans to continue his academic career in the aviation sector, fuelled by the passion that has guided him thus far.
