Leap of faith: the voyage of discovery and dedication at Massey

Hailing from Fiji, Lawrence B. Sharma migrated to New Zealand in 2004. A seasoned Resource Teacher: Vision (RTV) at the Blind and Low Vision Educational Network New Zealand (BLENNZ) ’s Homai Campus in South Auckland, Manurewa, Lawrence realised he needed to further his qualifications to serve his students better. This realisation led him to Massey University.

With the financial backing of a two-year scholarship from the Ministry of Education and BLENNZ, Lawrence embarked on his journey to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching at Massey. Even though he knew it would be a significant challenge - having been some time since his previous tertiary studies - he bravely took the leap, likening it to “jumping into the sea without knowing how to swim.”

The road to this achievement could have been smoother, filled with emotional and mental hurdles, sleepless nights, and stress. Maintaining a balance between his professional obligations, studies, family life, and social circles was paramount, even if it meant cutting back on his social engagements.

“I was overwhelmingly relieved and glad when I found out I had passed; the tears of joy would not stop! The feeling of pleasure, satisfaction and knowing that all the effort and time I put into it has finally produced a positive result. The joy of achieving such outcomes in the latter part of my career was the pinnacle of my life,” Lawrence shares.

A crucial element in Lawrence’s successful academic journey was the tremendous support from the Massey faculty. They made him feel comfortable, helped him navigate confusing patches in his work, and provided invaluable opportunities during and after the COVID pandemic.

Reflecting on his time at Massey, Lawrence cherishes it as a treasured experience. The sense of community, inclusivity, and support he felt throughout his academic journey were unparalleled. The connections he made, the knowledge he amassed, and the life lessons he learned were genuinely invaluable.

“Massey made that dream a reality,” Lawrence says.

Currently, Lawrence continues to serve as a Resource Teacher Vision at BLENNZ. Equipped with a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, inspiration, and motivation, he is making a difference in his field.

“It is never too late to study, and Massey provides a wonderful window of opportunity,” he adds.
