Fiona McTavish

2021 Women of Influence finalist: Women in leadership promoter

As a finalist in the Women of Influence awards, it’s fitting that Fiona McTavish is committed to women in leadership. As Chief Executive Officer of Toi Moana (Bay of Plenty Regional Council), Fiona’s leadership team is now predominantly women and there has also been an increase in women people leaders over her tenure. She is also creating an organisation where the environment is a central focus and where staff can thrive. With a partnership mindset, Fiona is also embracing and supporting organisational awareness of mātauranga Māori.

Fiona holds education to be of value. She graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration and Management from Massey. Her community contributions also encompass improving education outcomes in schools, manifesting in roles as an elected trustee on two school boards and a trustee for Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ.

Fiona says, “My standout memory was how easy it was to complete this postgraduate diploma while working because of the Massey University ways of working. Clarity on what was required throughout the year and terrific support from tutors and lecturers. I also enjoyed the mix of virtual and in-place learning so I could meet and connect with other students.”

Fiona shares, “My advice is be prepared to flex and adapt throughout your career with following your heart and living your values as your North Star.”
