Dr Trisia Farrelly

2021 Women of Influence finalist: Environmental campaigner

Dr Trisia Farrelly is a Massey anthropologist from the School of People, Environment and Planning. Trisia completed her doctorate at Massey, focusing on community-based ecotourism. As a passionate campaigner against excessive and hazardous plastics production, Trisia’s work over the past four years has included designing the architecture of a legally binding global plastic pollution treaty.

Trisia shares how her Massey experience changed her life in a special way. “My standout memory from my time at Massey was meeting my husband who was studying Environmental Planning at the time. We got to know each other through our Massey University Alpine Club membership and ended up rock, mountain, and ice climbing, tramping, skiing, and kayaking our way through our academic years together. Good times!”

"Trisia’s words of advice to students new to Massey?" Communicate regularly with your peers, and most importantly, to your course coordinator, lecturers, and tutors. Make sure you are known to them as enthusiastic, thoughtful, and respectful. Share your aspirations related to the course. Make an effort to be part of the culture of your programme and your university. Seek help actively and early. Massey offers a huge range of support services. Get to know what they are and take full advantage of them.”
