Born into a diverse heritage of Vietnamese and Pākehā (Irish, English) descent, Lan Pham has crafted a life dedicated to service and advocacy. Her six-year tenure as a regional councillor for Environment Canterbury set the stage for her ascent into the national political arena. "I’m really proud to be the first MP of Vietnamese heritage."

Carl Bates – from university debater to public servant
Before entering Parliament in 2023, Carl Bates built a professional services firm in Africa, serving clients worldwide. His extensive experience includes serving as a director or chairman for numerous companies including in the primary industries, animal health, food safety, manufacturing, retail, health, and education. Now, his multiple leadership roles have led him to contribute to New Zealand’s public service.

Based in Palmerston North, Tangi Utikere’s professional background combines local government and education. As the first elected member of Pacific heritage in Palmerston North, Tangi says, “Massey equipped me with the set of tools necessary for my professional journey. The education I received was not just academic but also practical, preparing me for diverse roles in education and public service.”

Aya Morris – a Fulbright Scholar’s journey in Sustainable Development
Aya Morris was honoured with the 2022 Fulbright New Zealand Scholarship, which enabled her to join a research team at Columbia University in New York City. As part of her Master of Sustainable Development Goals programme at Massey, she focused on sustainable development and resilience in coastal communities.
