A Top NZ Sport Psychologist’s Views on Meeting Challenges in Life and in Sport

Massey Alumni Relations invites you to our upcoming networking function and to hear Gary Hermansson speak. Gary will draw on his extensive experience as a sport psychologist to many of NZ’s elite athletes to present his views on handling the pressures of everyday life and, especially, within sporting contexts. He will share what he has learned from working with the best in sport and, as part of that, show what is important mentally in bringing your best to performance whatever the level or the context.

  • Played over 100 first class games of rugby – including playing in provincial teams that beat the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions.
  • Trained counsellors at Massey University for over 25 years – Professor Emeritus and currently Professor of Sport Psychology.
  • Team Psychologist to:
     - NZ Equestrian Team to Germany
     - NZ Commonwealth Games Teams (5 campaigns: 1998- 2014; Kuala Lumper to Glasgow)
     - NZ Olympic Games Teams (5 campaigns: 2000-2016; Sydney to Rio)
     - NZ Blackcaps Cricket Team (14 Tours)
  • Worked with many of the country’s top athletes in a wide range of sports.
  • Written the well-received book ‘Going Mental in Sport: Excelling through Mind-Management’ available on Amazon.
  • Made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit (ONZM) in 2015 for services to the field of sport psychology.
  • Awarded the Order of the NZ Olympic Committee in 2017 for services to the Olympic movement
