Celebrating 50 years of business excellence: join the BBS reunion at Massey University

Join us in celebrating a remarkable milestone as we mark 50 years since the first graduates of Massey University’s Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) programme embarked on their professional journeys. On 30 September 2024, we invite alumni to return to where it all began at Massey University ManawatÅ« Campus and reconnect with classmates, faculty, and the university that shaped their careers.

Massey University introduced the BBS Degree in 1971. The inaugural class of around 40 students had 12 graduates in 1974, with additional graduates in 1975 and 1976. Richard Handley, one of the event organisers and a proud member of the first graduating class of 1974, will be among the distinguished attendees. He says, “We started in 1971 as a normal bunch of students, some fresh from school, others with prior tertiary and industry experience, and all keen to progress their learning, to play some sport, and to have some fun. We did that, and after 50 years, this group is impressive in its success, both professionally and in life. The BBS Degree served us well, and we will celebrate that on 30 September.”

This reunion offers a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the BBS programme’s origins and successes. The event will start with an engaging afternoon tea, followed by a guest speaker from Massey Business School, and conclude with a dinner to honour the past, celebrate the present, and envision the future of business studies at Massey University.

The foundation of the BBS degree was a significant milestone in Massey University’s history, marked by the appointment of Professor George H. Hines in 1973. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping a comprehensive and dynamic business programme that catered to the needs of both students and the business community.

From its early days, the BBS degree offered specialisations in fields such as Agricultural Business, Data Processing, Economics, Financial Management, Marketing, and Personnel Administration, providing a robust and versatile education.

Dr Jeff Stangl, Director of International and Strategic Partnerships at Massey Business School has been with MBS for 20 years this year, highlighting the ongoing commitment to excellence that has characterised the BBS programme for five decades. “The Bachelor of Business Studies was designed to ensure graduates were ready to contribute from day one. We continuously evolve the programme, adding new majors and keeping the curriculum relevant to the demands of the modern business world,” says Dr Stangl. The most recent addition, Applied Professional Practice, exemplifies this commitment by fostering entrepreneurial skills crucial for New Zealand’s SME-driven economy.
