Tui Brewery 2014 Reunion Visit

Decades of companionship: celebrating 40 years of Massey friendships

In a recent heart-warming gathering, around 60 Massey alumni came together to honour a 40-year bond dating back to 1984. It was a celebration not just of time passed but of enduring friendships formed in their university days, many of whom shared experiences in student hostels like City, Egmont Courts, and Walter Dyer.

The group has convened every few years since their 20th anniversary in 2004. Now in their late fifties, they continue celebrating their tradition, reflecting on memories and making new ones. The event was marked by a reflective dinner, a visit to the Manawatū campus, and a vibrant night of music, with some alumni providing entertainment through their bands Iceland Bars and The Rough Diamonds, reminiscent of their college days.

Jo Jalfon, the reunion co-organiser, shares, Our time at Massey wasn’t just an educational journey; it was where our lifelong friendships were formed, fostered by the close quarters of hostel life in a time before social media.

I moved into Walter Dyer in 1984, and there was a real sense of family among those living away from home. Hundreds of young people were thrown together without any family support networks, creating a furnace for forging strong friendships.

Chris Thomson, one of the co-organisers and the lead vocalist for both bands, shares his thoughts on the weekend. These bands took the stage on Saturday night at a local bar in Palmerston North, featuring performances with Brett Stansfield and later with DJ Mat Stone. The weekend’s reunion gathering was a particularly special experience being amongst friends of 40 years, playing music to them and just continuing what we once did back to them and enjoyed so much. Fortunately, our good times and connections have continued over the years.

Massey University was probably the most social, fun, and important time of my life. I listened to and learned about all aspects of life from friends and acquaintances. I know without it, I would not be the same person today—without a doubt.

Michael Ahie, esteemed Massey alumnus and former Chancellor, reflected on the 40th anniversary event, The 1984-2024 40th Anniversary event was a wonderful occasion to celebrate lifelong friendships and memories. Friendships were built because we all chose to come to Massey University. I have very fond memories of our time as Massey students, and this was a chance to gather and celebrate 40 years of friendship and how much Massey University has been a part of our shared history.

This reunion exemplifies the enduring connections made at Massey University, highlighting that it’s more than just an educational institution; it’s a community where lifelong relationships are nurtured and cherished.
