From music, creative arts, and animation to fashion and industrial design, our graduates are recognised worldwide for their creativity and innovation. Their work blends cultural values with modern techniques, wins prestigious awards for design excellence, and enables voice through art making.

Tessa Hills – from Gisborne to the global stage
Tessa Hills, also known as DJ Messie, has quickly risen in the global music scene after graduating with a Bachelor of Commercial Music. A turning point came when she performed for a crowd of 35,000 in Perth, a huge leap from her usual 250-person audience. The success of that performance led to an invitation to play at Glastonbury’s Shangri-La stage this June.

Karen Seccombe and WAI – 13 years of collective art making
Dr Karen Seccombe founded the Women’s Art Initiative (WAI) in a small local dental clinic with just seven wāhine (women) as a form of resistance and response to the violence and abuse they had experienced. Over the past 13 years, WAI has grown into a dynamic collective – they shared strong words, challenged negative stereotypes, asked society to take responsibility, and continued to grow.

Moretekorohunga Lloyd – a cultural journey into animation
The journey of Moretekorohunga Lloyd, Te Whakatōhea, Te Aupōuri, into the world of animation is deeply connected to his upbringing. More’s early exposure to Māori cultural values has influenced his storytelling style, and his work has a unique perspective that blends Māori traditions with modern narratives.

Jack Pugh – James Dyson National Award winner for medical tool innovation
Jack Pugh, a recent Bachelor of Design with Honours graduate, has won the prestigious James Dyson national award for his innovative medical multi-tool, Cap Snap. “The motivation for my design was to make life easier for busy healthcare professionals who work with medications each day and are at risk.”

Austin Martin – award-winning shoe designs redefine safety and style
Master of Design alumnus Austin Martin has won a number of awards for his sport performance shoes at the Fifth Annual Global Footwear Awards and the Fit Sport Design Awards. His projects, STRYDE, completed in 2021 as an undergraduate student, and TrailGuard, completed in 2023 as a postgraduate project, demonstrate his growth as an industrial designer.

In 2025, Massey’s Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching (primary endorsement) is pleased to announce the inclusion of the School Onsite Training Programme (SOTP), with 32 places available in school. Successful candidates will receive a $12,500 teacher trainee stipend and $7,000 towards course fees.
