Claudia Di Leva: Crafting stories with purpose

Absolute Authority is a collection that draws attention to the similarities between dystopian fiction and reality. By analysing the rise of extremism in political groups and the dangerous implications of unchecked power, the collection connects dystopian novels to real life examples. Featuring tailoring, layered construction, and bead embroidery, it captures the imagined experience of living under a dystopian fascist regime.

Claudia’s practice is rooted in a deep love of tailoring and fine detail, with every design decision considered with precision and care. She approaches each garment with its whole life in mind, creating pieces that are built to last. Through this craft-driven practice, she strives to raise awareness of pressing political issues while honouring her enduring love for storytelling.

Claudia graduated in 2025 with a Bachelor of Design with Honours. Her creative path began with a love of making things and that passion led her to learn how to sew.

“I loved it so much that I wanted to go and study it.”

Her time at Massey introduced her to new possibilities in costume. Claudia had always gained inspiration from films, television and books. Studying fashion helped her recognise how these interests could become part of her professional practice.

One of the most valuable parts of her study was the community she found during her honours year. As the class became closer, collaboration with classmates and lecturers created an environment where support was always available.

“Whenever I had a problem, I could literally go to anyone. There was so much support from everyone.”

Her friends and family were also important throughout her studies. Living at home in Wellington gave Claudia a dependable support during stressful projects. “They were always ready to listen, offer advice or help me find inspiration.”

Showing at New Zealand Fashion Week gives Claudia the opportunity to bring her work and its message to a wider audience. Being selected was a big surprise: “I never expected that I would be in it. It means a lot because I can showcase my work and the message I’m trying to put out there.”

Claudia also sees the event as an opportunity to celebrate the strength of emerging design in Aotearoa.

“There’s so much talent here. At Massey and all across New Zealand.”

Claudia is now a Junior Costume Technician at Wētā Workshop. She is beginning to build a career in the film industry. She hopes to continue developing her skills at Wētā Workshop before exploring the costume and film industries beyond New Zealand.
