From childhood dream to the cockpit: Charlie Teariki takes flight

“Since I was young, I’ve always wanted to fly”. That early fascination has now come full circle, as Charlie Teariki graduates with a Bachelor of Aviation and steps confidently into a career already underway.

Originally from the Cook Islands and raised in New Zealand, Charlie chose Massey University for a very practical reason. “I wanted to pursue a career in flying, and Massey offers both the degree and the licenses. It felt like the best place to be.”

That decision has paid off. Even before crossing the graduation stage, Charlie had already secured a role with Air Rarotonga, flying passengers around the Cook Islands. 

Despite his achievements, graduation day itself was a whirlwind of emotions. “I was really nervous, just trying to process everything. There was a lot of cheering and yelling, but it was special. Seeing my little nephews perform a haka was a highlight.”

For Charlie, the day wasn’t just about personal success. “It’s about seeing everyone together, being proud of what they’ve accomplished,” he says.

Behind that moment stands a strong support network. Charlie credits his parents for their huge support throughout his studies, as well as the friends who shared the journey with him. “We’ve all pushed through together!” 

Some of his favourite memories are the simplest ones: late nights studying with friends, building connections, and sharing the journey. “Those moments really stick with you.” 

“It’s not easy. There are long nights, early mornings, blood, sweat and tears.”

But standing where he is now, already flying professionally, he knows it was worth it.

His advice to future aviation students is straightforward: “Stick to it, keep that end goal in mind and figure out your why. Your why is what’s going to get you through. That’s what’s going to make all those sacrifices worth it. Meitaki maata and God bless.”
