Samuel Whiley: Finding the right fit
Samuel Whiley graduated with a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Marketing, after changing direction early in his studies. He began in Sport and Exercise, but during his first year decided it wasn’t the best fit for him.
“That’s when I decided to swap over to a Bachelor of Business. Over the course of the first year, I realised my strengths were better used elsewhere,” he says.
That decision proved to be a turning point. Within the business degree, Sam found his stride in marketing.
“I felt marketing was my strength.” Sam particularly enjoyed papers in international and digital marketing, alongside economics and finance, which gave him a solid grounding in business.
Like many students, Sam says the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Rather than struggling with coursework alone, his biggest challenge was still working out exactly where he wanted to head next.
“I’m still learning my direction. This feels like one big step forward, but there are still many steps to take. That said, it’s definitely given me a great trajectory to move forward with.”
Sam says strong support helped him get through his studies. His parents encouraged him throughout, and he credits Massey staff for creating a supportive learning environment.
“The lecturers were always willing to lend a hand whenever I got stuck. They really seemed eager to help every student succeed, even with the tricky parts of group projects.”
Graduation day itself was a moment Sam won’t forget.
“Shaking hands with the Chancellor, and hearing the sparks and the loud bang, that was definitely the highlight,” he says.
Walking across the stage also brought a mix of nerves and excitement.
“I was fairly nervous, but very excited. In that moment, I could really take in how many years and how many hours in the library had gone into getting that piece of paper.”
Looking back, Sam believes university is an ideal place for students to explore, reassess and grow, even if their first choice doesn’t turn out to be the right one.
