Marvin Fernandez
Marvin Fernandez, a Civil Engineer by training and a Quantity Surveyor by profession, embarked on an enriching journey at Massey University, and he recently completed his Master of Construction with Distinction in Quantity Surveying. Originally from the dynamic construction environments of Qatar and UAE, Marvin has been refining his skills in the field since 2013. Driven by a blend of professional experience and a pursuit of academic credentials, he sought to enhance his qualifications to stay competitive in his field.
Despite his extensive experience, Marvin felt the need to solidify his expertise with formal education. The unexpected turn of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a career pause when his employer went into liquidation, prompting Marvin to seize this as an opportunity for growth. In February 2023, he made a bold move with his family to New Zealand, aiming to pursue his master’s degree at Massey University. This decision would open new doors and broaden his professional horizons.
Marvin’s transition back to academia after 13 years was met with challenges and uncertainties, especially balancing the demands of studies with the need to support his family financially. However, Massey’s unique block course format gave him the flexibility he needed, meeting only a few days each semester and allowing him to work part-time while excelling in his studies. “The doubt of not managing my subjects faded away when I slowly excelled in my studies due to sufficient time to study, good lectures provided during the block courses, wonderful support from the lecture team, good facility in the library to study, and helpful study materials.”
Within a week of starting his classes, Marvin secured a job as a Quantity Surveyor, thanks to his newfound knowledge of CostX software taught in his first course. This practical application of classroom lessons to the workplace showcased the immediate value of his Massey education.
Midway through his academic year, Marvin participated in the PAQS-IWATA Foundation essay competition, where he articulated the role of a Quantity Surveyor in decarbonisation. “I prepared my essay during the semester break to share my viewpoint and was shocked to receive a commendation award for such an essay despite multiple QS organisation members competing,” Marvin shared.
As Marvin approached the completion of his degree, he sought to further enhance his skills by joining the Academic Toastmasters club on campus. This initiative significantly improved his public speaking abilities and boosted his confidence.
The culmination of Marvin’s hard work and dedication came just minutes before his graduation ceremony on May 21, 2024, when he received confirmation of passing his Assessment of Professional Competence from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), officially making him a Chartered Quantity Surveyor. This achievement was particularly significant as it validated the comprehensive education he received at Massey, which was directly applicable to the standards and practices in New Zealand.
Now, Marvin successfully transitioned from his Massey study to the workforce, securing a role as an Intermediate Quantity Surveyor at Naylor Love, one of New Zealand’s largest construction companies. “NL hired me because of my Massey degree. They said they selected me over other local candidates because of my dedication to self-development.”
Reflecting on his journey, Marvin expressed profound gratitude for the opportunities and growth facilitated by his time at Massey University. He shared, “This is becoming a regular occurrence,” responding to a former director who noted his consistent achievements. Marvin credits his success to the nurturing environment at Massey, which provided academic support and professional growth opportunities.
“I hope my story inspires those still undecided about pursuing higher studies. Get it done; you never know. Maybe you need to be in an environment that nourishes growth and unlocks your potential, as Massey University has given me. “
