Harry Jaques
Graduating with a degree in Education and walking across the stage with his young daughter by his side was a moment Harry Jaques will never forget.
Originally inspired by his wife Jasmine, who completed the same teaching degree at Massey, Harry says she was the one who encouraged him to enrol. “She was a real role model – she studied here first and recommended it,” he shares.
His journey through university came with major milestones, both academic and personal. “I’m dyslexic, and I worked really hard to get through it,” Harry says. “In the middle of the year, we had a baby; I got married. It was a lot, but I made it through. I’m proud that I did it… and now I’m a teacher. I’m quite proud of myself.”
The support around him made a meaningful difference throughout his journey. “My wife was a constant source of guidance, and my lecturers — Jasmine Hansen, Danielle Hodson, and Maria Dacre — were all incredible,” he says. “I’m also grateful to my Associate Teachers, Sarah Carpendale at Central Normal School and Clare McCallum at Koputaroa School, for guiding me through my placements and showing me what great teaching looks like. And my family, especially my parents, were really supportive.”
One of the highlights of graduation? “Definitely being on stage with my daughter Rose. That was the best thing ever – even though she cried in front of everyone, it was pretty funny,” he laughs.
Looking ahead, Harry plans to stay and teach in New Zealand for a few years before heading overseas to gain international experience. “I’d love to travel and teach and get paid for it, which is nice, then come back here.”
